ost of Care
A topic very much in the mind of those with elderly parents who if they go into care can mean fees of £2000 a month.
Once the assets get down to £23600 the state will step and pay but you can understand why some look with envy upon those with no assets who get it all paid.
Numerous adverts claim to have the solution to this problem usually at a cost of thousands of pounds. Beware though because all these schemes are likely to fail due to the fact that they will be void as they are done solely to deprive the State of revenue. They all involve the setting up of Trusts and we too can do this for you but before we do we shall make sure you are aware of all the drawbacks. Most people then decide not to proceed but if you do go ahead it will cost you a fraction of the costs charged elsewhere.
More likely is that you will prefer to look at the home and decide to sever the Joint tenancy and so preserve half the value. Once again this is a fraction of the cost of these schemes.
One thing to bare in mind generally is that not everybody goes into care and the policy now is to keep us at home. Relative’s energy may be better devoted to trying to keep their relatives away from care . Moving them to accommodation or involving them in social activities have been shown to keep the dreaded Altzheimer’s at bay.
Sadly if they do eventually succumb all is not lost. Remember that if the relative is looked after by the NHS there is no payment and so for obvious reasons the health professionals try to pass the patient onto the Local Authority where the patient pays. This can be resisted and there are cases where the NHS has been forced to pay for even those cared for in their own home let alone Nursing Homes.
